Michigan will almost certainly start two transfers at linebacker this fall when Jaishawn Barham joins Ernest Hausmann in featured roles for the Wolverines.

Hausmann, who transferred from Nebraska ahead of the 2023 season, more than held his own while rotating behind Junior Colson and Mike Barrett last fall. He tallied 46 tackles, third-highest on the team, while ranking in the 96th percentile among linebackers in PFF’s missed tackle rate.

“Last year was a tremendous year, obviously winning the national championship, but being able to learn under so many great people, great leadership here at Michigan with players and coaching staff,” Hausmann said over the weekend. “It was one of those things that you really don’t know how it’s going to be, how it’s going to play out. My mentality coming here to Michigan was being able to just absorb, be a sponge, just absorb any knowledge I can. It really prepared me for this year.”

Now Hausmann figures to step into the starting job at middle linebacker.

“The big thing is you always have that leadership role,” Hausmann said. “With being the Mike linebacker here in Michigan, being able to communicate, being that field general that people can count on to understand where people are lining up and stuff like that. Different role and looking forward to it.”

According to Hausmann, early returns from fall camp indicate Barham has taken those necessary steps.

“It’s really awesome,” Hausmann said of playing alongside Barham. “Fall camp has been really fun. I can see playing with him, it’s like a certain switch that flips once you start understanding this defense. It kind of took off from spring, developed and then toward the end of it, you could finally see it clicking and clicking. Then now since camp and each and every day, he’s starting to understand more and more and more. It’s very fun to play with him.”

The Wolverines begin their season on August 31 against Fresno State.

Flanking Hausmann will be Jaishawn Barham, a former Top247 prospect who shined during two years at Maryland by recording 95 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 7 sacks and 41 quarterback pressures in 23 games. Among his highlights in 2023 was an interception of J.J. McCarthy, the only one he threw in Big Ten play all year.

Barham enrolled at Michigan before the spring, and coaches “didn’t throw him in the shallow end; we threw him into the deep end,” as linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary recounted. The rising junior is “super-talented,” he said, but faced a learning curve while picking up the intricacies of the defense.
