This offseason, longtime New York Yankees star Gleyber Torres made a surprising move, signing a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers. His departure from the Yankees came after general manager Brian Cashman stated that Torres was unwilling to change positions following the acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr.
When asked about the situation, Torres expressed confusion, saying, “To be honest, I don’t know what’s going on there. I thought everything was fine, but I guess not. I don’t want to comment further, just turning the page. Whatever they decide, they decide. I’m focused on my goals for this year—getting better and helping my team.”
But it wasn’t just the change in teams that marked Torres’ offseason. Like many former Yankees, he embraced a bit more freedom, growing out his beard—something strictly prohibited in the Yankees’ locker room.
My wife really likes it. My son really likes it,” Torres said with a smile, showing off his new facial hair. “First time.” Fans were quick to react, with one joking, “The Yankees’ facial hair policy statistically subtracts an ungodly amount of aura,” while another chimed in, “Gained so much aura with a beard, wow.” A third fan added, “I’ll say it again. Every player that leaves the Yankees instantly gains +1000 aura.”
In his press conference, Torres admitted that watching the Tigers’ playoff push last year played a role in his decision to sign with Detroit. “I’m just a simple guy. I want to give 100 percent every time I play, try to help the team win, and do everything for the team,” Torres said.
“What they did last year was amazing, and the Tigers showed the fans they can win. I just came here to help bring that mentality, starting with getting to the postseason and then aiming for the World Series.” Torres, a two-time All-Star in 2018 and 2019, is eager to bring his talent to Detroit and contribute to their future success.
