Jadeveon Clowney signs with Panthers: Ex-South Carolina star, No. 1 overall pick returns home in free agency.

The Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms with free agent pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, the team announced Wednesday. The deal is reportedly for two years and worth up to $24 million as Clowney returns home to the Carolinas in the twilight of his career after one of his best seasons. Clowney managed 9.5 sacks last fall for the Baltimore Ravens and nearly re-signed with the AFC runner-up. One of the top free agents on the NFL market, the former No. 1 overall draft pick is originally from Rock, Hill, S.C.

“Clowney visited the Panthers and Jets, while remaining in touch with the Ravens,” Rapoport posted Wednesday to social media. “Very quietly, Carolina pulls off a big one.”

After being selected with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Texans, Clowney has tallied 320 total tackles, 43 sacks and forced 13 fumbles. So far in his time in the NFL, Clowney has been selected to the Pro Bowl three times and was a second team All-Pro in 2016 with the Texans.

Best known for his huge hit in the Outback Bowl against Michigan Jan. 1, 2013, Clowney is one of the most talked about players to ever come through South Carolina. After signing with the Gamecocks as the No. 1 overall recruit in the country, he recorded 129 tackles with 47 tackles for loss and 24 sacks in three seasons in Columbia.

Clowney was selected as a first team All-American in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013 while also being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2012. He exploded onto the scene as a true freshman in 2011 and was named the SEC Freshman of the Year after tallying 36 total tackles with 12 for loss and eight sacks.
