Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki has declined a contract offer from the New York Yankees, opting instead to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Several factors influenced Sasaki’s decision to reject the Yankees’ proposal. Notably, Sasaki has expressed a preference for playing on the West Coast, which is geographically closer to Japan and offers a more familiar environment. This preference made teams like the Dodgers and San Diego Padres more appealing destinations.
Additionally, Sasaki’s personality and desire for a less intense media environment played a role. According to ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney, Sasaki is perceived as a “very quiet, very serious person,” leading some to believe he might prefer a setting where he isn’t the center of attention. This inclination could make a smaller market or a team with established stars more suitable for him.
Furthermore, Sasaki’s agent, Joel Wolfe, suggested that Sasaki may benefit from an environment with less media scrutiny. Wolfe indicated that Sasaki had previously faced challenges dealing with the Japanese press and might prefer a setting where he isn’t the focal point of media attention.
These considerations collectively contributed to Sasaki’s decision to decline the Yankees’ offer and join the Dodgers, where he will be part of a formidable rotation alongside fellow Japanese stars Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
