The Chicago Bears are reportedly close to hiring former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen as their new defensive coordinator. This move comes as part of newly appointed head coach Ben Johnson’s efforts to assemble a strong coaching staff.
Dennis Allen, 52, served as the Saints’ defensive coordinator from 2015 to 2021 before becoming their head coach in 2022. He was dismissed in November 2024 after a 2-7 start to the season, concluding his tenure with an 18-25 record. Prior to his time in New Orleans, Allen was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2012 to 2014, where he compiled an 8-28 record.
Despite challenges in his head coaching roles, Allen is widely respected for his defensive expertise. His potential appointment in Chicago is seen by some analysts as a “home run hire,” given his extensive experience and previous success as a defensive coordinator.
The Bears recently hired Ben Johnson, formerly the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, as their head coach. Johnson has been proactive in building his coaching team, and bringing in a seasoned coach like Allen could provide valuable experience and leadership on the defensive side of the ball.
As of now, the Bears must comply with the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs, before they can officially finalize Allen’s hiring.
