The San Francisco 49ers are poised to enter the 2024 NFL season with most of it’s core group intact.
The 49ers came up just short in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII and will be looking to get back to the championship game as they are the early favorites to come out of the NFC.
However, San Francisco has one big question remaining this offseason and that’s what they decide to do with star receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
Aiyuk is set to enter the regular season on the final year of his rookie deal and is eligible for an extension, though so far no agreement has been made between the two sides.
Aiyuk has dropped passive-aggressive hints on social media that he’s frustrated with negotiations though the team hasn’t agreed to trade him just yet.
With OTAs set to begin soon, the two sides are still not apparently close to getting a deal done via NBC Sports.
I’m told the 49ers certainly are open to doing a deal, but talks have not progressed enough where things are close,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said.
Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers reportedly are not close in contract extension negotiations with OTAs set to begin this week.
Aiyuk is in line to receive a massive extension after putting up 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in the regular season.
While Deebo Samuel is the more physical receiver, Aiyuk has a knack for finding open space and getting himself open to give Brock Purdy an easy target.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has praised Aiyuk’s development over the years, and it would be in the team’s best interest to lock him up long-term if they’re serious about competing for a Super Bowl.
