Shilen Patel pens open letter, details West Brom transfer plan and the unseen investment

Shilen Patel has written to the West Bromwich Albion following after the end of the 2023-24 season about transfers, the Women’s team and season ticket sales

West Bromwich Albion’s controlling shareholder and chairman Shilen Patel has written a letter addressing the club’s supporters following the disappointment of missing out on promotion at the end of last season – and, more significantly, what’s to come this summer.

Albion have a need to act particularly prudently as they rebuild. Without parachute payments, which the club have relied on for the best part of 20 years, the club has been running at a loss. Indeed the outlook appeared especially sketchy until Patel’s arrival in February, during which time he has stabilised the club’s finances and paid off the Wisdom Smart loan.

The Baggies took the opportunity this spring to confirm that a host of senior players would be leaving at the ends of their contracts in order to significantly reduce the wage-bill. They must keep within the Profitability and Sustainability Rules, and that’ll mean intelligent recruitment in the summer as part of a rebuild which will hopefully mean Carlos Corberan is equipped suitably to challenge towards the top of the division again.

Patel has also confirmed that work is ongoing at the club’s Walsall training base to upgrade the facilities; while Albion can’t spend freely on transfers and wages, they can improve the environment in which the playing and coaching staff work on a daily basis. The Hawthorns ‘ pitch is set to be attended to, too.

Albion will also officially welcome the Women’s team under their umbrella from this summer onwards. Previously, although funded by the club, WBA Women have operated separately but has now been brought into line with the Men’s team. Patel also took the opportunity in his address to confirm that the Baggies’ season ticket sales are going well – it’s understood they’ve sold 2,500 more than at this stage last season.
