SHOCKING: Mets Star advised to Retire following Injury setback.

Edwin Diaz’s brutal 2024 season has been made even worse by a right shoulder impingement that has cost him multiple weeks. The New York Mets’ closer has had a very rough season, his first since injuring his knee during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Diaz was moved to the 15-day IL after tweaking the shoulder on his throwing side at the end of May. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Diaz could make a rehab appearance in the minor leagues while the team heads to London for its overseas series.

“He threw a bullpen today. 21 pitches, felt good,” Mendoza said before the Mets’ Tuesday win over the Washington Nationals. “Let’s see how he feels tomorrow and then there’s a chance he could be pitching in a game on Thursday in the minor leagues.”

Mendoza said that as long as “everything continues to progress the way it’s going,” Diaz will be activated on schedule. The Mets are looking to get him back next week but he will have to get through his rehab start without any hiccups first.

Mets’ Edwin Diaz looking to bounce back from awful start to 2024 season

The Mets preparing to play the Philadelphia Phillies in London this weekend helps them get more time for Diaz to recover without missing games. They’ll have just two games in five days and then come back home for a six-game homestand.

Mets' Edwin Diaz

Diaz has a 5.40 ERA in 20.0 innings and has blown four saves this season. After not allowing four home runs in any of his last three healthy seasons, he has already surrendered five in 2024. His strikeout rate plummeting from outrageous heights to just above-average rate that sits in line with several starting pitchers has given hitters a much better chance against him. Once the premier closer in all of baseball, Diaz’s return to the big leagues after missing all of 2023 has not been pretty.

Really, not very much has been pretty for the Mets this season. Blown leads, injuries and embarrassing incidents left and right have the entire baseball world laughing at them. At 26-35, they are in fourth place in the National League East. Although they have won two straight and four of their last six, New York still has a lot of ground to make up in the standings.
