SHOCK: Leeds Star has Snubbed new contract offer worth E5m says he wants to join Rivals.
Leeds United double contract snub could play into Hull City’s hands.
With the official turn of the season last Monday, there are plenty of free agents still available to Championship outfits.
The talk surrounding Hull City at present has largely been in relation to the potential departure of key players, with the departures of both Jaden Philogene and Jacob Greaves expected imminently.
Though such discourse is completely understandable, it will frustrate Tigers supporters that there has been a distinct lack of rumours when it comes to new arrivals under Tim Walter, who is preparing for his first season in the English game.
The only man to set foot in the door so far is Ryan Giles, after the club triggered an option to sign the former Luton Town loanee on a permanent basis, but uncertainty still remains over the left-back amid continued interest from his former club, Middlesbrough.
However, 60 miles west down the M62, there is still a cloud hanging over the future of two Leeds United men, which is a scenario Hull could look to capitalise on.
Hull City could pursue two-year deal for academy graduate Liam Cooper.
It’s been just short of 16 years since Liam Cooper made his professional debut for the Tigers in a 2-1 EFL Cup defeat to Swansea, with plenty of water moving under the bridge since then as far as club and player are concerned.
The Scotland international was utilised as a bit-part player under Phil Brown, Nigel Pearson, Nick Barmby, and latterly, Steve Bruce, featuring just 17 times for his hometown club before moving to Chesterfield on a permanent basis in January 2013.
You’d be hard-pressed to find any Tigers or Spireites supporters that could have foreseen the career Cooper would go on to forge as captain of the Elland Road side, making 284 appearances for the club he’s since confessed to have supported as a boy, rather to the annoyance of Hull fans.
However, City could look to capitalise on the fact Cooper is looking for a new challenge, having reportedly failed to reach a new contract agreement with Daniel Farke’s side after making just 15 appearances in the second tier last term, as well as being linked with a loan move to Blackburn in January.
Those reports claim that Cooper rejected a fresh one-year deal in West Yorkshire, but it looks to be a case of “needs must” as far as City are concerned after David Ornstein of the Athletic revealed that the club have allowed Greaves to pursue a medical at Portman Road, meaning the offering of a two-year deal to the Scotland international – although hardly a popular scenario most supporters would like the club to pursue – would give Walter some much-needed experience and depth at the heart of his new defence.
Hull let go of some experienced and seasoned professionals after the conclusion of last term. Therefore, despite his estimated £25,000 per week wages, which would need to be cut – there are far worse options than the potential re-signing of their academy graduate on a free transfer.
