SAD NEWS: Patriots reveal shocking guarded secrets
Why did Patriots draft a 2nd QB? Rocket-arm passer had ‘too much talent’
The New England Patriots landed their quarterback of the future on Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft. So why did they take a second quarterback two days later?
According to Eliot Wolf, there was simply too much talent to pass up.
The Patriots’ de facto general manager appeared on “The Adam Schefter Podcast” this week and discussed the team’s moves so far this offseason.
There was little surprise when the team took North Carolina’s Drake Maye No. 3 overall. However, there was a bit of buzz when New England took Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton in the sixth round.
So what did the Patriots see in Milton that made it worth double-dipping at quarterback
“It was just one of those picks where there was too much talent in him to pass that up,” Wolf said.
Milton and Maye now enter a crowded quarterback room that features newly signed veteran Jacoby Brissett along with the returning Bailey Zappe.
Wolf said that the team was confident in taking a raw quarterback like Milton because of the support system the organization has. In particular, Wolf highlighted quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo as coaches who can help develop talent.
And Wolf made it clear: He sees a whole lot of talent in Milton.
“I had the opportunity to watch Joe play live, the last game of the year against Vanderbilt. I got there really early and watched him warm up. Just watching him throw the football is unbelievable,” Wolf said.
“He’s 6-5, 245 pounds. He’s got a rocket for an arm. He’s athletic. He played in (Tennessee head coach Josh) Heupel’s offense there. It’s not an NFL offense, but we feel like there’s some things that we can work with and develop,” he continued.
Between Maye and Milton, the Patriots acquired two quarterbacks who are widely believed to need further development before succeeding in the NFL. However, Wolf stressed that the presence of Brissett will allow New England to take its time before putting those quarterbacks on the field.
“We’ve spent time with Drake and Joe. But we haven’t had a work day with them yet. They’ll get in here next week. We’ll gauge where they’re at. We’ll gauge where the coaching staff thinks there at,” Wolf said.
“We know where Jacoby’s at,” he continued. “He’s been here working his tail off since the offseason program started. So we’ll see how it goes.”
