Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Báez has been placed on the 10-day injured list after being diagnosed with inflammation in his right hip and lumbar spine. This injury could potentially keep the 31-year-old out for the remainder of the season.

Manager A.J. Hinch revealed that the team is awaiting further details after Báez undergoes additional tests. Báez, who returned to Wrigley Field earlier this week, has been a vital figure throughout his career, including his crucial role in the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 World Series victory. During that championship run, he batted .375 in the NLDS and earned co-MVP honors in the NLCS, leading the Cubs to their first title in over a century.

Despite his past successes, Báez has struggled since signing a $140 million, six-year contract with the Tigers in December 2021. This season, he has hit just .184, with six home runs and 37 RBIs across 80 games.

“Javy came into my office after the game to discuss the ongoing issues with his hip and back. We decided to send him for tests, which confirmed the need to place him on the injured list. We’ll have more information after further tests tomorrow to determine the full extent and how long he might be out,” Hinch explained.

In response to Báez’s injury, the Tigers have recalled infielder Ryan Kreidler from Triple-A Toledo. Kreidler has appeared in 21 games for the Tigers this season, recording six hits in 44 at-bats.
