SAD NEWS: Daniil Medvedev’s injury gets worsen as he is set to undergo knee Surgery.

Daniil Medvedev was forced to abandon his 2024 Madrid Open quarter-final match midway through due to groin issues, and his Italian Open is in doubt because of it.

The Russian retired against Jiri Lehecka. Towards the end of the set, he started to struggle with his movement, calling the physio for a recurring issue. After some treatment, Medvedev did feel better but expressed a reluctance to really play.

He tried to run but immediately signaled that it wasn’t going to happen, so he retired down 0-1 in sets. It didn’t look very good in real-time, so not many expected positive news regarding his participation in the Italian Open.

Defending Champion Medvedev Claims Italian Open At Risk After Madrid Injury

“I felt it on a return in which he had served and volleyed. I don’t know if I felt it at the time of the return or when he made the drop volley, but when I went to run, I tried to accelerate and, in that movement, I suddenly felt like my hip was locking. I couldn’t sprint, like when you have a strain or a spasm, it’s really hard to know which is the right option between these two.”

It’s a huge shame because Medvedev is the defending champion of the event, and obviously, both he and the event organizers won’t be too pleased with this outcome. He confided after the match that his participation was in doubt, but ultimately, he’ll know more in the coming days.

“Right now, yes, without a doubt. I need to see the pictures and talk to my team. It would be great to be able to come back after winning the title last year, but I need to see what injury I have, because right now I have no idea if It is something very serious, barely serious or not at all serious.”
