Jordan De Goey in concerning injury development as Collingwood dealt fresh blow
De Goey has been ruled out indefinitely with an abdominal strain.
Jordan De Goey has been ruled out of Collingwood’s next match against Fremantle despite being cleared of concussion after his late heroics against Adelaide. De Goey hit his back and head on the ground and left the field early in the final quarter after a heavy fall during a contest in the Pies’ thrilling four-point win.
However, he was given the all-clear and returned to the field in the dying stages, taking a clutch mark and kicking the winning goal with just under two minutes remaining. Following the match Collingwood coach Craig McRae said he could be in doubt to face Fremantle with concussion-related symptoms.
After the game De Goey was cleared by the Pies medical team of a concussion, however, he has been ruled out of the Dockers game with an abdominal strain he picked up in the win over Adelaide. The 28-year-old hurt his abdomen in the third quarter on Saturday but managed to play out the game. However, on Tuesday he was unable to complete the club’s training session and will now go for scans to determine the severity of his injury, with the Pies concerned he may be set for an extended stint on the sidelines.
“Jordy won’t play,” coach Craig McRae said on Tuesday. “He’s got a fresh injury, he’s got an abdominal strain. He got that in the game and played through it and pulled up quite sore from it. He’s getting scans now to check out what that means.
“We tried to give it some time just to see how it was going and he obviously didn’t get through it (training) and then went off for scans. We’ll find out a bit more how deep it is.”
Jordan De Goey suffers yet another injury setback
The news of De Goey’s latest injury blow comes as his workload has been scaled back already in recent weeks amid concerns he could develop the debilitating groin issue osteitis pubis (OP). De Goey experienced groin soreness after the Crows game but McRae dismissed any concerns over the previous injury, stating that this is a completely separate issue.
“No, this is a separate injury,” he said. “Actually the other one has sort of settled down and this has expressed itself as an abdominal injury. It’s nothing to do with OP. We actually worked through that process of assessing it wasn’t OP or the start of that.”
Craig McRae suggests a reshuffle in wake of injury crisis
Collingwood still has a host of stars on the sidelines heading into this Friday’s match and McRae has hinted at resting players to ensure their injury crisis doesn’t get worse. Forwards Beau McCreery and Brody Mihocek are on track to return from concussion and a hamstring strain respectively after training normally on Tuesday but attackers Jamie Elliott, Dan McStay, Jeremy Howe, Reef McInnes and Will Hoskin-Elliott are still sidelined.
