Craig Breslow tight-lipped on contract talks with Red Sox manager
A big question surrounding the Boston Red Sox this season is the status of Alex Cora beyond 2024. The manager is in the final year of his contract, and there haven’t been any talks of an extension — at least publicly — since spring training.
Cora’s focus is on the 2024 campaign and getting the Red Sox back to the postseason for the first time since 2021. But it’s a question that will likely continue to be asked as long as Cora remains without a contract.
Appearing on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Wednesday morning, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was tight-lipped when asked where things stand in terms of a potential extension.
“Conversations about Alex’s future will take place between Alex and me. I don’t think that it makes sense to speak to a specific timeline outside of saying that neither Alex nor I want this to be a distraction,” he said. “I think we’re both very, very capable of preventing it from becoming a distraction.
“There are certain realities that we can only face by living through a season that are really, really important in establishing the trust and accountability and transparency required for a really strong and lasting relationship,” Breslow added. “I’m very excited about the start that we’ve gotten off to.”
Cora, 48, has made it clear that he doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life managing and doesn’t want to be Tony LaRussa or Terry Francona. Whether that means he wants to continue to manager beyond age 48 is a mystery.
For now, Cora will look to keep the momentum going for the Red Sox, who just completed the sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 1-0 win Wednesday afternoon. They now turn their attention to a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels that begins Friday night at Angel Stadium.
