Pittsburgh Pirates Could Make Taylor Ward Trade

The Los Angeles Angels are going to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline. One of their more valuable assets is outfielder Taylor Ward. The Pittsburgh Pirates need an upgrade and could target Taylor Ward in a trade. The teams are reportedly discussing a potential trade.

Ward is hitting .238 with a .737 OPS this season. He also possesses two additional seasons under contract, which add tremendous value to his trade package. While Ward is primarily an outfielder, he can also play third base if needed. This versatility is coveted by several teams.

What Would a Pirates-Taylor Ward Trade Look Like?

The Los Angeles Angels are nowhere near competing, so they’ll likely prefer a package of prospects. From the Pirates’ perspective, they’ve started to have some success with their young pitchers. Rookies Paul Skenes and Jared Jones have been great for the team this year. With their rotation quickly filling up, they could be willing to move some pitching prospects.

One strong pitching prospect who could be used in the trade is Braxton Ashcraft. Ashcraft carries plus stuff, along with good control. At 24, Ashcraft is MLB-ready and can make an impact this season. MLB Pipeline ranks Ashcraft as the Pirates’ number-five prospect. This would be a tremendous addition to the Angels rotation. The Angels won’t want to trade Ward given his additional years of control, but an arm of this caliber could pry him away.

An additional piece to put into a trade could be Hunter Barco. Barco ranks as the Pirates’ number twelve prospect. Barco needs some development and won’t be in the majors for a few years yet. He could be a great secondary piece to acquire for the Angels, and the Pirates may not have a spot in their rotation for him.

The Pirates are looking for upgrades and could make a Taylor Ward trade. If they pry him away from the Angels, this could be the trade package.
