3 Winnipeg Jets Not Expected Back Next Season.
The Winnipeg Jets couldn’t get passed the Colorado Avalanche and had their season ended five games into their first-round series. The Jets exceeded expectations during the regular season but weren’t able to continue their strong play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was aggressive during the regular season, making several trades to try and boost the roster. It unfortunately didn’t work and now the Jets’ GM goes back to the drawing board. Winnipeg has a projected $13.3 million in cap space to work with and there’s going to be some big decisions to come. Here’s three Jets who aren’t expected back next season:
Sean Monahan
While it looked like the right decision during the end of the regular season, Sean Monahan was nowhere to be found come playoff time. The veteran centre had just one assist in five playoff games and now hits the free-agent market looking for a long-term contract. Cheveldayoff won’t be interested and look for Monahan to move on this summer. The 29-year-old will have a long list of suitors and will likely sign a four or five-year contract on July 1.
Dylan DeMelo
The Jets are going to revamp their defense core and are going to have a hard time getting DeMelo re-signed. The right-handed blueliner registered one assist in five playoff games after posting 31 points in 82 regular season games. He very well could price himself out of the Jets wheel house and Cheveldayoff will have to find a replacement to play over 20 minutes a night.
Colin Miller
Speaking of the Jets’ defense, they brought in Miller in season and unfortunately for both sides it didn’t work out. The right-handed d-man only played five regular season games and finally suited up in the elimination game, registering one assist. After posting 21 points last season for the Dallas Stars, Miller only managed nine points this season between the Jets and New Jersey Devils and now will be moving on come free agency this summer.
