Could the Mets target a veteran left-handed reliever from the Detroit Tigers?
The New York Mets are about to exit the All-Star break in the final Wild Card spot and three games over .500 (49-46), which seemed unthinkable at the end of May.
With the team’s recent turnaround, the organization’s plans for the trade deadline have also changed, with president of baseball operations David Stearns already making a couple of moves to help the floundering bullpen.
Still, the blue and orange need more bullpen help and could target a veteran left-handed reliever from the struggling Detroit Tigers.
The Mets could target Andrew Chafin.
A potential target to upgrade the Mets bullpen could be trading for Andrew Chafin from the struggling Tigers, who are currently sitting at 47-50 and seven games back of the final wild-card spot in a strong American League.
Chafin has had a resurgent year since heading to the Motor City on a one-year deal this past offseason, pitching 32 innings across 36 appearances to a 3.66 ERA and a 1.531 WHIP with 41 strikeouts while also picking up one save.
The 34-year-old has pitched even stronger than those numbers indicate, with a FIP of 2.82 and ERA+ of 115.
Why would acquiring Chafin make sense
The Mets acquiring Chafin would make sense for a lot of reasons. One of the biggest problems in the blue and orange bullpen has been how poorly the left-handed relievers have pitched.
Brooks Raley has been lost since the middle of April after needing to undergo elbow surgery. Raley’s replacement, Jake Diekman, has been nothing short of a disaster, with a 5.53 ERA across 39 appearances. Acquiring Chafin would fill that void.
In addition, the cost to trade for the Ohio native would not be as high as some of the more prominent arms available at this year’s deadline.
Time will tell if the Mets make the move, but acquiring Chafin would give the blue and orange that solid lefty reliever they have desired.
