JUST IN: Ajax Star Steven Bergwijn clarifies his future amid premier league Return.
West Ham United are interested in signing Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn during the summer transfer window, according to Graeme Bailey.
The journalist reported via TBR Football (29 May) that the Hammers are interested in securing the Dutchman who Ajax may have to offload this summer having missed out on Champions League qualification.
Sources have suggested that Bergwijn is open to a move back to London having previously played for Tottenham, whilst both Brighton and Brentford are understood to be interested in the 26-year-old.
The Hammers were previously linked with the former Spurs man during the January transfer window when David Moyes was looking to add to his wide options [Jacob Steinberg, 8 January], but no such move ever came to fruition.
Will West Ham United sign Steven Bergwijn during the summer transfer window?
Julen Lopetegui may not even officially yet be in post at the London Stadium, as his contract doesn’t start until July, but it is safe to say that the former Real Madrid boss is wasting no time getting to work with the Irons.
The Hammers’ interest in Bergwijn has been apparent for months now and a potential move does make sense. Ajax need to sell whilst the Irons and Lopetegui will be desperate for attacking reinforcements this summer.
While he has been back in the Netherlands for a while now, the 26-year-old has experience in the Premier League and while he didn’t set the world alight at Tottenham, he still managed to impress in a Spurs shirt.
If Bergwijn is as keen on a move back to the Premier League and London as has been reported, agreeing personal terms isn’t likely to be an issue for the Irons and they will have the financial power to beat Brentford to his signature.
This could be a deal to keep an eye on in the coming weeks as Lopetegui is expected to make a number of signings ahead of the start of pre-season.
