I won’t leave, I want to stay Motherwell hero makes decisions on his future

Motherwell hero is happy at the club, but knows there will be interest

Theo Bair is under contract for another season and is in no hurry to move on

Theo Bair has enjoyed the best season of his life and knows that will attract interest in him – but the striker is in no hurry to leave Motherwell.

Bair rattled in 15 goals for Motherwell in an impressive campaign that he hopes gives him a crack at the Copa America this summer with Canada.

But Bair, 24, says he has learned so much from working under boss Stuart Kettlewell and his coaches at Fir Park, and is looking to continue that next season, whether he gets his call-up dream or not.

Bair said: “I’ve reiterated this many times that I’m very happy here.

“I think that the staff here is amazing, the players are amazing, and I had a very good season, so I’m happy here, and now we just keep going.

“It has been a really good season, the best season of my life, and I’m looking to build on that.

“It was a great season. I wish as a collective that we did a bit better, but that’s what we build on and I’m happy with that.”

Copa America nations have until June 12 to finalise their rosters, and it’s likely that new Canada boss Mauro Biello will announce this before then, though it’s uncertain when.

For now, Bair has his fingers crossed, and said: “I’m hoping it’s going to be a big summer, on to Canada. We’ve got two friendlies against Netherlands and France, and then Argentina in the opening game.

“There’s a lot of stuff going on at Canada soccer at the moment, we just got a new gaffer, so I’m sure that things are kind of all over the place and they’re trying to organise it now.

Bair was left frustrated in the final game of the Premiership season as he drew a blank against St Johnstone

“I’m assuming we’ll find out soon.”

Bair drew a blank on the final day of the season for Motherwell as they lost 2-1, a result that kept his former side St Johnstone in the Premiership.

Bair had a number of chances, had a penalty saved by Dimitar Mitov, and one cleared off the line by the narrowest of margins, but didn’t hit the net.

But he insists there is no animosity towards a club where he scored just one goal in the previous season before being released.

Bair said: “It didn’t seem to be my day, unfortunately. I had some missed chances and a missed pen, but I didn’t think we played particularly badly.

“There were a lot of chances in the second half, goal-line clearances, off the post, across the net, that sort of stuff, but that’s how football goes sometimes.

“At the penalty, my strong side is the left, but I switched in-between. I was going to go right, and I switched.

“You can never switch, because if you switch you miss, so it’s a learning thing for me.

“I don’t think I hit it too badly, but it’s my second penalty miss of the season, having missed one at Dundee, but Georgie Gent scored.”

On Saints staying up, Bair said: “There’s no bad blood, I’m pleased for them. Congratulations, they put on a hell of a performance, especially defensively, but also some decent goals from them as well.

“Unfortunate, I’d say, for us to not score more goals against them, but congratulations for staying up.”
