MLB: Mets cut ties with one of team’s longest tenured players, who is an eight-year ve

The New York Mets continue to make changes, at least when it comes to the their stable of catchers.

The club activated starting catcher Francisco Alvarez from the Injured List on Tuesday and in a corresponding move designated longtime backup Tomas Nido for assignment. Nido was first drafted by the team in 2012 and made his MLB debut in 2017.

Nido became expendable after the Mets acquired Luis Torrens from the Yankees last month, as part of the Mets revolving door of players at the position. Torrens was traded for after the team designated fellow backstop Omar Narvaez for assignment.

Nido, 30, was still under team control through 2026. He was hitting .229 with three home runs this year and is a lifetime .214 hitter.

“Thank you, @mets!” he wrote. “12 years, it was a good run! Wishing the guys nothing but the best.”
