Colts’ Quenton Nelson expands on praise of QB Anthony Richardson.

This past spring, Indianapolis Colts All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson insisted that second-year pro Anthony Richardson is already “everything you want in a quarterback.”

Nelson expanded on his comments during a recent appearance on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast.

“He’s an absolute freak,” Nelson said about Richardson, as shared by Kevin Patra of the NFL’s website. “Like he’s weighing in after practice at like 250 pounds. He’s ginormous. He can launch the ball and be accurate with it, too. The plays that he can make, some of the ones you’ve seen, the flashes of it. It’s like, oh my goodness, this guy is special.”

Of course, one concern is that Richardson may have trusted his “freak” qualities a bit too much during his rookie campaign. The fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft was visibly shaken up during his regular-season debut before he suffered a concussion the following weekend. Richardson then went down with a season-ending shoulder injury in his fourth start.

will take to better protect Richardson this coming fall. Nelson suggested that Richardson did well to address all aspects of his game ahead of the signal-caller’s second pro training camp.

“He’s not very vocal, I’d say, but he goes about his business in a way that he’s handling it, and he’s ready at all times,” Nelson added about Richardson. “Yeah, he’s a special dude.”

Richardson dealt with some “soreness” in his throwing shoulder during mandatory minicamp but is expected to be a full participant when Indianapolis begins training-camp practices later this month.

As of late Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Richardson fourth among the betting favorites at +600 odds to win the Comeback Player of the Year Award for the upcoming season.

Richardson completed 59.5 percent of 84 passes for 577 yards with three touchdowns and an interception last season. He also rushed for 136 yards and four scores on 25 attempts.

The 22-year-old will look to build upon a handful of promising performances and avoid costly injury setbacks beginning with Indianapolis’ Week 1 game versus the Houston Texans on Sept. 8.
