DONE DEAL: UConn completes the signing of a top veteran

Top recruit Sarah Strong officially signs with UConn women’s basketball program

The No. 1 high school girls basketball player in the nation was officially announced as a member of the UConn women’s basketball team on Tuesday.

In a release Tuesday afternoon, UConn announced Sarah Strong, both the Naismith High School and Gatorade Player of the Year award national recipient, as a member of the Class of 2028. The 6-foot-2 forward was a McDonald’s All-American.

“We’ve been very close with Sarah for a long time, and we’ve seen her grow and develop into as good a player out of high school as we’ve seen in quite some time,” UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma said in a release. “The skill set that she has is both brand new and fits today’s game perfectly, and it’s also a throwback to an age when it didn’t matter what size players were, they played the entire game. They passed, they shot, they handled the ball, they rebounded. I think we’re getting a pretty special player and a special person.”

UConn signee Sarah Strong headed to USA Basketball U18 trials

Strong averaged 21.0 points, 16.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.8 steals per game in her senior year at Grace Christian (N.C.) High. According to the UConn release, Strong finished with 2,302 points and 1,628 rebounds and helped lead Grace Christian to 41 consecutive victories.

Strong didn’t verbally commit to UConn until April. She is one of 26 players participating in the 2024 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team trials beginning Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
