DONE DEAL: Detroit Red Wings have confirmed the signing of a new Goalie.

The Detroit Red Wings’ goaltending situation is a bit complicated.

That’s mainly because Ville Husso, who’s entering the final season of a three-year deal he signed after being acquired from St. Louis in a 2022 trade, essentially missed the final four months of the season with two different injuries and experienced setbacks.

He hasn’t been the same goaltender that flourished the first three-quarters of the 2022-23 season and the Red Wings don’t know what to expect from him in 2024-25. Will he be healthy? Can he be effective again as the No. 1?

Alex Lyon also is entering the final year of his contract and is a good insurance policy. He was a savior this past season, but a career-high 44 games pushed him to the limit. He might be better suited as a backup limited to around 30 games.

James Reimer stepped up late in the season in sporadic starts spelling Lyon and is an unrestricted free agent.

The uncertainty with Husso will compel the club to carry three goalies again.

Sebastian Cossa, the 15th pick in the 2021 draft, is coming off a strong first full season in Grand Rapids but isn’t expected to compete for a full-time NHL job until 2025-26.

The Red Wings could seek a bona fide starter capable of playing 50 games. A few big names appear to be available via trade. They carry huge cap hits, however, and money is something general manager Steve Yzerman must manage wisely in an offseason where Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond are up for new contracts with hefty raises.

That’s why it’s more likely they’ll seek an economical alternative through free agency, someone who can handle a heavy workload if needed or play sparingly as the backup or No. 3 man.

Here is a look at some options (with age):

Free agent possibilities

Laurent Brossoit, Winnipeg (31): The career backup is coming off his best season (2.00 goals-against average, .927 save percentage in 23 games), which could earn him a multiyear pact at a decent raise from his $1.75 million salary.

James Reimer, Detroit (36): In the end, maybe the Red Wings return with the same three goalies. Reimer struggled early on, and Lyon ran with the job. But Reimer won five of his final six starts to keep the team in the playoff chase and wouldn’t cost much on a one-year deal (perhaps less than his $1.5 million salary from 2023-24).

Ilya Samsonov, Toronto (27): He experienced the worst season of his five-year career (3.13 GAA, .890 save percentage). He’s still young but the Leafs don’t want him back. He’ll likely need to prove himself with a short-term deal at less than the $3.55 million he earned this season.
