DONE DEAL: Boston Celtics have completed the deal to replace Oshae Brissett.

Oshae Brissett has opted out of his $2.5 million player option for next season.

The Boston Celtics forward spent last season coming off the bench for Joe Mazzulla’s team. He provided physicality and energy while also allowing the Celtics to explore some small-ball lineups. Brissett now gets the opportunity to test his free-agent market following a championship run.

Brissett, 26, played in 55 regular-season games for the Celtics. He averaged 3.7 points and 2.9 rebounds on 44.4 percent shooting from the field. However, his box-score production doesn’t provide the full scope of his impact. He is the sort of player who can swing the momentum of a game. His hustle plays galvanized the Celtics on multiple occasions.

The Celtics are a second tax apron team. Their ability to round out the back end of the roster is limited to draft picks, trades and veteran-minimum deals. Jordan Walsh could be bumped up in the rotation. However, he is still a raw talent and could benefit from a second season with the Maine Celtics in the G League.

Fortunately for Boston, it will negotiate with free agents from a position of strength. The Celtics are the 2024 NBA champions, and their core talents are all under long-term contracts. As such, Mazzulla’s team will be legitimate contenders for at least another three years. Veteran talents searching for a championship ring could potentially be willing to take a minimum contract to contend.

Of course, Boston can’t guarantee playing time. Brissett averaged 11.5 minutes per game during the regular season, but that dropped to 5.5 minutes per night in the playoffs. Assuming he doesn’t return during free agency, any potential replacement for Brissett must accept that they will be a backup talent and their role will be subject to change on a game-to-game basis.

Nevertheless, Brad Stevens must now find a viable replacement for Brissett. A major strength of Boston’s championship roster was its depth. Figuring out how to keep retooling the fringes while dealing with the limitations of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement won’t be easy.

Fortunately for the Celtics, they have the 30th and 54th picks in the 2024 NBA Draft. As such, they could find a ready-made replacement on draft night. If not, there will be no shortage of players willing to take a pay cut to hitch a ride on Boston’s wagon.
