DIFFICULT SITUATION: I want to stay, I don’t want to leave, Panthers key man insists.
Jadeveon Clowney is heading back home to play for his hometown team for the first time in his career.
It took him a decade, but the former No. 1 pick is back to where it all started.
With that in mind, he shared his thoughts on heading back home, stating that he had always been looking forward to playing for them, but he wanted to be more mature first (via Around the NFL):
“I used to just watch them on TV all the time and say I can’t wait till I get my opportunity to do that one day,” Clowney said. “Years ago, when I hit free agency, I told my agent not to reach out to Carolina because I wanted to mature more. And to get to this point where I know if I have to go back there, I can handle myself, and it won’t be a problem for me to do my job because I was still learning how to be a pro.
That’s why he snubbed them the first time he hit free agency.
Now, he finally feels ready.
Clowney was a superstar in college when he played for the South Carolina Gamecocks.
A three-year tenure there made him the undisputed No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, as scouts were in awe of his power and numbers.
He was a bit of a late bloomer for the Houston Texans, but he eventually became an impactful player.

Clowney was later traded to the Seattle Seahawks, and he has also played for the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens, spending just one year with every organization except for the Browns.
Injuries and an untamable character hampered his ability to establish himself anywhere in the league.
But now that he’s 31 and a ten-year veteran, he knows it’s time to settle down.
Of course, things won’t always be easy in Carolina with this current roster, but they could definitely use some veteran leadership there.
