DEAL DONE: 49ers Close In On Deal To Sign new top veteran RB worth $40 Million
The San Francisco 49ers are often mentioned as a team that values running backs more than the rest of the league. This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise that they are giving their star back Christian McCaffrey a new lucrative deal.
The 49ers announced that McCaffrey inked an extension, but didn’t disclose the details of the agreement. The reports from league sources indicated that the contract is for two years and is worth $38 million. This ensures that McCaffrey continues to be the best-paid running back in the NFL.
McCaffrey’s new contract comes with an average annual salary of $19 million, while the second-highest running back in the league, New Orleans Saints Alvin Kamara, is making $15 million annually.
McCaffrey was already the top earner among backs thanks to a four-year, $64 million extension he signed back in 2020 while with the Carolina Panthers.
McCaffrey’s new extension comes after he enjoyed a great year in his first full season with the 49ers in 2023. He finished the regular season with 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground while adding 67 catches for 564 yards and seven receiving TDs.
During the postseason, McCaffrey helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl LVIII. He rushed for 268 yards and four touchdowns while having 19 receptions for 152 yards and one TD.
