DAMN: I feel betrayed by 49ers for their brutal decision.
The San Francisco 49ers are coming off yet another incredible season that almost ended with a Super Bowl victory. The team has been on the cusp of a championship for half a decade now, and they are solely focused on bringing the Super Bowl trophy back to San Francisco. The team is making some significant coaching changes for this season in hopes of finally getting the job done.
San Francisco 49ers Making Key Coaching Changes
On Wednesday this week, the team announced some of the key new hires for coaching positions as well as their internal promotions for this season. Most importantly, Nick Sorenson was internally promoted to the defensive coordinator role for the coaching staff, replacing Steve Wilks after just one season.
One of the most notable hires from outside the organization this offseason was hiring former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as their new assistant head coach and defensive assistant. Per ProFootballTalk, he was a candidate for the DC position as well and he will “work closely” with Sorenson on the defensive side of the ball.
Additionally, the team brought in Mick Lombardi as the team’s senior offensive assistant. Lombardi was previously the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Some of the other notable coaching changes for this upcoming season feature former players. Ex linebacker K.J. Wright was hired as the defensive quality of control coach. The former linebacker knowns the franchise very well playing many games against them in his career.
The team hired a new assistant offensive line coach in Cameron Clemmons, and lastly, they brought in Klay Kubiak as the assistant quarterbacks coach and a passing game specialist for the team. Interestingly enough, he will serve in a very similar position that his brother Klint did last season.
Coaching can make all the difference for a team that was a play or two away from being the champions of the league. This team also may not have all that much time left to capitalize on this incredible roster as they will have to pay players and guys are getting older. Look for the Niners to make a huge push to bring the trophy to San Francisco this year.
