CURRENT NEWS: Red Wings pen new contract worth $8.5 million with rivals top star
It appears that New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba will be dealt to the Detroit Red Wings, per Lary Brooks of the New York Post, ending his five-year run on Broadway.
“A well-placed source has told The Post that GM Chris Drury is working on a deal to send the captain to the Red Wings,” Brooks wrote in an article published earlier this morning. The deal would include the Blueshirts retaining $2.5 million in salary for the remaining two years of his contract, which has an AAV of $8 million. This would save the team around $5.5 million in cap space. This would also raise their cap space to $21.1 million.
Trouba was named captain two years ago but struggled this season. He was paired with K’Andre Miller early on but then moved to the third defense pairing in the second half of the season. He suffered a fractured ankle prior to the end of the regular season and was cleared to play in the postseason, but despite some massive hits in the playoffs, he never seemed comfortable.
Trouba has a modified no-trade clause that kicks in on July 1. The club has already asked him for his no-trade list, with a free agency set to begin on Monday.
Despite the best regular season in the team’s history, the playoffs were disappointing. Reaching the Eastern Conference finals was not good enough. The team needs more cap space to get the players whom he thinks he needs to make a run next season.
Red Wings Making Progress to Re-Sign 3-Time Stanley Cup Champion Forward: Report
The Detroit Red Wings are still talking to pending free agent forward Patrick Kane on a contract extension, DailyFaceoff.com’s Frank Seravalli reports.
Kane signed a one-year $2.75 million deal with the Red Wings on November 28, 2023, after he recovered from hip surgery. If Kane does hit free agency on July 1, he will be one of the top players available, but Seravalli reports Detroit is still in talks with him to get a new contract done.
“Red Wings are among teams grinding with their UFAs today – and belief is they’ve made progress with Patrick Kane. But the next 24 hours are going to be wild,” Seravalli wrote on X.
The NHL insider then wrote that Detroit is also talking with other soon-to-be free agents Shayne Gostisbehere and David Perron.
“What about the Detroit Red Wings? Their season ended 76 days ago, yet Steve Yzerman is negotiating with Shayne Gostisbehere, David Perron, and Patrick Kane into the 11th hour. And all the while, the rest of the league is salivating to see whether these players make it to market,” Seravalli wrote.

Kane recorded 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points in 50 games with Detroit. The American forward is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, winning all three Cups while he was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.
