Ex-49er arrested after alleged attempted robbery, shooting.
A former NFL player who once played for the San Francisco 49ers was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery in Mendocino County, authorities said.
Gregory Mark Cox, 59, was arrested last week and booked into Mendocino County Jail on charges of attempted robbery and conspiracy, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. He was accused of attempting to rob a home in Leggett with a woman named Amanda Dee Chapman, who was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and felony charges, the sheriff’s office said.
Cox, a defensive back, played four seasons in the NFL, for the 49ers in 1988 and 1990-1991 and for the New York Giants in 1989, according to Pro Football Reference. Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Cox played college football at San Jose State University and is a resident of Vallejo.
The alleged botched robbery happened last Friday at a residence on the 51400 block of North Highway 101 in Leggett. Officers responded to the home for a report of a man who was shot in the hand just before 11 p.m.
Investigators said that the man was shot by Chapman during an altercation after the victim and his girlfriend arrived home and found Chapman and Cox inside. Chapman allegedly brandished a firearm, pointed it at the man and then shot his hand as he tried to take the firearm from her, authorities said.
Chapman and Cox fled before sheriff deputies and medical personnel arrived.
The next day deputies located a pickup truck in Willits that was believed to have been at the victim’s home during the attempted robbery, authorities said. Deputies followed the truck to a home where Chapman allegedly tried to flee after seeing law enforcement. She climbed a fence but was arrested on the other side, officials said.
Cox was inside the home and tried to hide but later surrendered, authorities said. Investigators said they found “additional evidence” related to the attempted robbery during a search.
