Breaking: Crystal Palace “table offer” for £32k per week free agent
The winger for Athletic Bilbao has drawn interest from all around Europe, particularly England, as his contract is set to expire in June. Despite Athletic’s best efforts, Berenguer has not renewed his contract despite being a six-time La Liga scorer in 2023–24 and having his second-most prolific season in goal.
The Spanish newspaper Estadio Deportivo revealed last month that Brentford, Wolves, and Palace were all interested in signing Berenguer. According to local publication El Correo, Leicester City, who were just promoted, have entered the competition as well, considering his unresolved contract status.
The latter report focuses on Villarreal’s interest but it states there are already multiple offers on the table from the Premier League and Serie A. Berenguer, allowed to speak to as many clubs as he likes, is claimed to be open to the idea of staying at Athletic but lucrative contracts abroad could tempt him away.
Berenguer a huge coup for any suitor
Berenguer is a flexible player who can play on the right, through the center, or even at full-back. He is primarily a left winger. The Spaniard has accumulated 27 goals and 19 assists in 166 games with Athletic, but he has never represented his country on the field.
The Copa del Rey championship won by Athletic this season is the Pamplona native’s greatest accomplishment to far. After 40 years without a trophy, Berenguer ended the trophy drought against Mallorca with the game-winning penalty. Thanks to goals from Oihan Sancet and Dani Rodríguez, the final score was 1-1.
Berenguer started his career at Osasuna in La Liga 2 and helped guide Gorritxoak Los Rojillos to the Spanish top flight. The attacker scored five and made 12 assists in 84 games for Osasuna before moving to Italian outfit Torino for £6 million in 2017. There he netted 10 and notched another dozen assists ahead of his eventual £10.3 million move to Athletic in 2020.
