Basketball star Caitlin Clark makes WNBA debut tonight against the Connecticut Sun
UNCASVILLE, CT (WFSB) – One of the biggest names in basketball is scheduled to make her professional debut in Connecticut.
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever take on the Connecticut Sun at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville on Tuesday night.
“I can’t wait to see her play,” said Shawn Mack of New Britain.
Mack said he tried his luck online to get tickets to the game.
“I’ve been doing Ticketmaster trying to get tickets, but it’s hell. There’s no really good seats left,” Mack said.
The game was sold out. Any tickets left were through a vendor and costed hundreds, even thousands, of dollars.
It was expected to translate into a busy arena and casino on Tuesday.
“Our restaurants are sold out, our hotel is sold out and it’s a Tuesday night in May in general, not really the busiest time for us,” said Jeff Hamilton, president and general manager of Mohegan Sun.
The Sun are looking for a win. They said they’re concentrating on the game, but not forgetting who they’re up against.
“We have to make sure we are focused on us. Caitlin is an amazing player, but we’ve been doing this for a long time, so it’s just focusing on the main thing, keeping defense as our first mindset and moving forward,” said Moriah Jefferson, point guard for the Sun.
“We have a great crowd here in Connecticut usually at Mohegan but I think this is a sell-out crowd that can just bring more fans after that,” said Brionna Jones, center for the Sun.
The Sun also have their own star in Alyssa Thomas, an MVP candidate last season.
Clark holds the all-time scoring record for NCAA women’s basketball. The 22-year-old was the top pick in this year’s draft.
“This is something that’s been due for a long time,” said Lorraine Balli of Kinderhook, New York.
That’s just one of the many reasons two fans made the trek from upstate New York.
“The mindset that the women have. To bring the program up to equal the men. They talk about the money and stuff but they play just as hard. They practice, they put aside their lives so we can have enjoyment,” Balli said.
Clark and the Fever had a shootaround Tuesday morning. She’s played two exhibition games over the last couple of weeks of training camp and is coming off leading Iowa to the national title game, where they fell to South Carolina.
“She’s brought a lot of attention to it. More people watching, more people excited about it, before people didn’t really care too much about girls’ basketball but she’s brought a lot of energy to the game,” said Mack.
Tip-off Tuesday is at 7:30 p.m. It can be watched on ESPN2 and streamed on Disney+.
Clark and the fever return to Mohegan Sun in June. That game is already sold out.
