Trade News: Detroit Tigers Veteran signs with Rivals.
The Boston Red Sox are trending upwards fighting for a playoff spot while the Detroit Tigers are heading in the opposite direction currently sitting 7.5 games behind the Red Sox in the Wild Card chase for the 2024 postseason. Today the two teams made a trade as the Red Sox acquired Trey Wingenter from the Tigers in exchange for CJ Weins.

Wingenter made his Tigers debut last season making 17 appearances going 1-0 with a 5.82 ERA, a 3.96 FIP, a 1.35 WHIP, and 22 strikeouts in 17 innings. This season he’s been pitching at Triple-A Toledo going 4-4 with a 3.31 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP, a 4.7 BB/9, and a 13.2 K/9 in 32.2 innings. Could be a nice piece for the Red Sox bullpen and a project for Andrew Bailey to figure out.
The Detroit Tigers traded right-handed reliever Trey Wingenter to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night in exchange for fellow right-handed reliever CJ Weins.
Wingenter, 30, has pitched in parts of three MLB seasons, including with the Tigers in 2023. He re-signed with the Tigers on a minor-league contract for the 2024 campaign and has spent the entire season in Triple-A Toledo.
The Red Sox selected Weins, a 23-year-old who hasn’t pitched above Low-A Salem, in the sixth round of the 2023 draft out of Western Kentucky.
In 2024, Wingenter has posted a 3.31 ERA with 17 walks (11.6% walk rate) and 48 strikeouts (32.9% strikeout rate) across 32⅔ innings in 26 relief appearances, with a 34.9% whiff rate. He was the best strikeout artist in the Tigers’ organization, but he struggles to throw strikes.
Wingenter threw 57.9% four-seam fastballs, 35% sliders and 7.1% splitters. He has thrown a fastball and slider for his entire career, but the splitter is a new addition to his pitch mix.
All three pitches helped him miss bats.
His fastball had a 27.6% whiff rate, his slider had a 46.2% whiff rate, and his splitter had a 47.4% whiff rate. The addition of the splitter has helped him induce more ground balls, all while giving him a third swing-and-miss pitch.
Acquired by the Tigers, Weins has a 4.81 ERA with 16 walks (14.7% walk rate) and 29 strikeouts (26.6% strikeout rate) across 24⅔ innings in 19 games out of the bullpen with Low-A Salem.
He signed for $50,000 — below the $320,000 slot value — as the No. 178 overall pick in the 2023 draft.
Weins used up all of his college eligibility pitching for Wabash Valley Community College in 2019 and 2020, South Carolina in 2021 and 2022 and Western Kentucky in 2023.
