Done deal: Browns signs American football placekicker.
The Browns are bringing back Cade York, who signed a one-year, $940,000 contract, Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reports.
The team cut York after trading for veteran Dustin Hopkins last August . Hopkins remains on the roster, due to make a base of $2.875 million with a cap charge of $3.54 million for 2024.
Hopkins converted 33 of 36 field goals, including four game-winners. His 31 field goals were the most in team history as were his eight 50-plus kicks.
The Browns made York a fourth-round pick in 2022.
They wanted him to return to their practice squad after cutting him, but York instead signed with the Titans’ practice squad. The Giants signed him off the Titans’ practice squad Nov. 3.
He injured quadriceps in practice and went on injured reserve Dec. 23.
As a rookie, York made only 24 of 32 field goals and 35 of 37 extra points.
The Cleveland Browns were one of the surprise teams to qualify for the 2023 NFL Playoffs as they suffered multiple injuries to key players throughout the regular season.
Cleveland got eliminated in the Wild Card Round by the Houston Texans, but their 2024 season outlook is bright as they’ve revamped the roster in the offseason.
Deshaun Watson is expected to be fully healthy, while general manager Andrew Berry went out and traded for Jerry Jeudy to give the passing game more juice.
Defensively, the Browns should remain as one of the best units in the NFL, especially with a healthy Myles Garrett coming off the edge.
As far as special teams go, Cleveland could use a boost to round out the rest of the roster.
On that note, the Browns are bringing back former kicker Cade York via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
“K Cade York is re-signing with the #Browns,” Cabot reported.
Cleveland originally drafted York in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft after he had a successful run at LSU.
However, York struggled his rookie season with field goals as he converted just 24-of-32 of his attempts.
He also missed a couple of extra points, going 35-of-37.
York then struggled the following preseason and the Browns wound up waiving him in favor of Dustin Hopkins.
The placekicker then spent time on the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants practice squads before finding himself back in Cleveland.
York will likely have to compete for the kicker job for 2024, and it’ll be interesting to see how he fares in his second stint.
