SHOCKING: Red Wings Star suffers career ending injury.
Detroit Red Wings star Johan Franzen was a scratch before Tuesday’s game after feeling ill, and his issues with head injuries have resurfaced, as head coach Jeff Blashill said Monday, per Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.
Franzen Placed on Injured Reserve
General manager Ken Holland announced Thursday that the team would place Franzen on injured reserve, freeing up cap space and a roster opening, per St. James.
Franzen, 35, has a history of head injuries and saw his season end last year in January after suffering a concussion. According to Max White of WXYZ.com, he said coming into the season that he would call it a career if he had another head injury.
Franzen certainly has had a decorated career, scoring 187 goals and 183 assists in 602 games over 11 seasons with the Red Wings. He also won a Stanley Cup in 2008 with the team.
Given his injury history, however, the Red Wings had to know it was always a possibility Franzen would miss time this season, so getting him on the ice at all was considered a bonus, not an expectation. The Red Wings have started quickly, winning their first three games, and the team made the postseason last year without Franzen, so it will still be quite dangerous without the veteran winger.
