Sad news: Oilers’ defenseman has broken his finger.

It was reported yesterday that Edmonton Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais broke his finger when fighting Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson in the second period of Edmonton’s Saturday night game against Colorado. Due to this injury, he did not return for the third period or Overtime.

The 27-year-old sophomore NHLer has 6 points, 104 hits, and 96 shot blocks in 63 games this season. He also plays a key role on the penalty kill for Edmonton. A week before the Trade Deadline, he switched places with Cody Ceci to be on the second pairing with Darnell Nurse. It has been slightly better than the Nurse/Ceci pairing we’d been seeing regularly. I haven’t heard how long this injury will be, but he will no doubt miss a few games and should still be back in time for the Playoffs.

This injury to Desharnais also opens the door for Troy Stecher’s return to the Oilers line-up, having suited up for his first game with his new team last week against the Washington Capitals. Expect him to indefinitely take over the second pair spot with Nurse while Ceci continues to stay with Brett Kulak on the third pairing

Here’s everything you need to know about free agent goalie Connor Ungar, who the Edmonton Oilers officially signed on Monday morning.

The Edmonton Oilers have officially confirmed their first university free agent signing of the season. Announced via a press release on Monday morning, they have agree terms with undrafted goaltender Connor Ungar.

Ungar is 6 foot 2 and 196 pounds, 22-years-old and was born in Calgary. Here is everything you need to know about the Oilers’ newest addition to the organisation:

1) Ungar did not become a regular starter until the 2021-22 season, with the Red Deer Rebels. He went 21-9-1 in 34 games, as he recorded a .911 save percentage and 2.43 Goals Against Average (GAA).

2) Ungar really rose to prominence the following season with the Moose Jaw Warriors, as he went 26-7-0 in 38 games and produced a .925 save percentage and 2.58 GAA. He then went 6-3-1 in 10 playoff appearances, recording a .915 save percentage and 2.74 GAA.

3) With Ungar no longer eligible for the WHL, he spent the 2023-24 season playing for Brock University in St. Catharines. He went 20-6-0 in 26 starts, in the process producing a .932 save percentage, 2.15 GAA and three shutouts.

4) As a result of Ungar’s performances in net for the Brock Badgers, he earned a whole host of awards. As per the Oilers, he was named OUA West Goaltender of the Year and OUA West Rookie of the Year, while being named to the OUA West First All-Star Team and OUA West All-Rookie Team.

5) As per PuckPedia, Ungar’s two-year entry deal will begin next season, with a $85,000 signing bonus. Each season carries a cap hit of $860,000, a $775,000 base salary and $82,500 in minors salary, with him set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2029.
