BREAKING: Collingwood’s top Profile player’s Career has ended.
The premiership defender has suffered at least 10 concussions in his playing days.
Collingwood premiership defender Nathan Murphy is set to make a call on his career as soon as this week as he battles ongoing concussion complications.
Murphy last featured in the Pies grand final triumph in 2023, where he was subbed out during the decider following a head knock in the second quarter.
With the recent retirement of Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw due to his battle with concussions, the 24-year-old has consulted an independent panel of doctors to ensure all bases are covered before any decision is made, according to Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary.
“The 24-year-old met with an independent panel of doctors on Saturday and is tonight weighing up his football future,” Cleary said.
“Murphy was in at the club today as he awaits on that panel’s outcome, the same process that medically retired Angus Brayshaw in February.
“Murphy suffered at least his 10th concussion in last year’s grand final and was initially cleared to continue his career.
“He returned to full training last month but hasn’t joined teammates on the track in the last fortnight.”
Murphy also admitted last week that he had to begin focusing on the future and what that could look like.
“For me as a person I’ve always been one to think about the future off the field, and so that’s always in the back of my mind,” Murphy said.
“The Gus thing — probably did make me go and get a head scan but I think I’ll make that a regular thing now and I think we do that with all these other injuries but when it comes to the head for some reason I just don’t think people do it … a lot of people who experience concussions should as well.
“For me, the future’s always in the back of my mind — I’ve been a guy that’s done uni since my second year and I’ve got other things outside football.
“I’m grateful and fortunate for the position I’m in, but there’s going to be a time in my career when football is going to be done and I need to move onto those things.
“The confidence (to return to to playing) is still there, but it’s just being able to adjust the technique so I can play the game longer.”
