Chicago Public Schools (CPS) officials recently addressed an incident at Hamline Elementary School, where Secret Service agents were mistakenly identified as ICE agents. The confusion occurred when the agents, who were investigating a threat against a government official, visited the school while tracking down an 11-year-old who had posted an anti-Trump video. Initially, CPS had stated that ICE agents arrived at the school, but later clarified that it was the Secret Service after learning more about the situation. The agents identified themselves to the principal and provided business cards before leaving without entering the school.
CPS CEO Pedro Martinez described the situation as a “misunderstanding,” emphasizing that the school followed its protocols to ensure safety, including not allowing the agents to interact with staff or students. This confusion comes amid heightened concerns within immigrant communities, particularly as rumors about potential ICE activity have been circulating in the area
