In a surprising turn of events, the Arizona Cardinals have terminated head coach Jonathan Gannon’s five-year contract after less than two seasons. Gannon, who was appointed in February 2023 following his tenure as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator, faced challenges in meeting the franchise’s performance expectations.

 

Under Gannon’s leadership, the Cardinals concluded the 2023 season with a 4-13 record, placing them at the bottom of the NFC West. Despite a promising start in 2024, including a four-game winning streak, the team experienced a significant downturn, losing four of their last five games and missing the playoffs. Gannon openly acknowledged the team’s struggles, stating, “I’m not satisfied with the performance of the team, and that starts with me.”

 

Reports suggest that internal disagreements and on-field performance issues contributed to the decision to part ways with Gannon. Tensions between Gannon and the front office, particularly regarding roster decisions and player development, may have further influenced the move. Cardinals’ owner Michael Bidwill expressed gratitude for Gannon’s efforts, stating, “I want to thank Jonathan for his time and contributions to the Arizona Cardinals. While this decision was difficult, we believe it is in the best interest of the franchise moving forward.”
